Technology and beauty for life
The project for the new pavilion of San Raffaele Hospital in Milan signed by Mario Cuccinella Architects has come to an end. This 8-storey building covering a surface of 36.000 m2 houses first aid, 20 operating rooms and 300 beds. For this project at the cutting edge of sustainable technology we had the pleasure to cooperate with AZA Corp, a leading company specialized in design and installation of building facades.
Iceberg, that’s it
The purest element in the world par excellence. An unpolluted mountain of ice, fascinating and fragile, symbol of a delicate, endangered ecosystem that must be protected. Such thought is in some way embedded in this project focused on sustainability.
The external façade of the building is composed by glass, marble slabs and aluminium profiles coated with white VOC-free powders. It seems to pierce the sky like a huge, linear iceberg.
The new building is defined by two complementary elements:
- the technical slab that hosts the emergency room
- the tower with in-patient wards and outpatient clinics.
The well-thought-out organization of space and the maximum exploitation of natural light make this project an archetype of a new functional node around which the entire cutting-edge activity of San Raffaele is organized.
“An object clear and simple as a block of ice, a Keith Jarrett sheet music”.

Smog-eating materials
As for construction materials, technological innovation made it possible to achieve extremely ambitious goals.
A surface of more than 5,000 m2 treated with antibacterial resins, aluminum supports mostly coming from recyclable sources, eco-friendly VOC-free powder coatings with no emission of harmful substances in the air and low carbon footprint.
But that’s not all. We still need to add door handles and components made of recycled plastic, state-of-the-art LED lighting and plumbing system designed to reduce potable water consumption.
Decoral commitment to environment and people wellbeing
The choice of materials suitable for hospitals, public facilities and nursing homes has led us, especially in recent years, to the formulation of products that can concretely protect the planet and people health.
Minimum environmental criteria (CAM) requirements and sustainability play a fundamental role in the production of our finishes.
Decoral Group contribution to the project
- Viv company powder coated the façade profiles with RAL 7039 finish
- Viv company powder coated the aluminium external supports for the brise soleil with RAL 9016 white finish
- Lamex provided the aluminium sheets for the internal fittings of the façade, crowning and closing elements on the ground floor, connecting sheets of the ventilated composite facades
Why to choose Decoral® finishes?
Our finishes for aluminium and other metals are VOC-free, certified and compliant with “CAM” requirements. For this reason, they can be included in technical documents of public tenders without giving up to the wide range of decorative patterns available or customized upon request. SEND AN INQUIRY.
