MAST Foundation (Art Manufacturing, Experimentation and Technology) is an international cultural institution which promotes creativity and entrepreneurship among young people. MAST builds a bridge between the company and the community. The activities and services offered to visitors are focused on technology, art and innovation with the purpose of developing new ideas, creating new relationships and business opportunities.

Architectural project

The building, opened in October 2013 in Bologna, was designed to represent the main goal of the Foundation which is combining public, social and company activities with culture, education and technology.

The project that won the competition was that of the architectural firm Labics in Rome, which designed a space bringing together all the values of the Foundation. A clear example is the combination of architecture and work of arts, both inside and outside the building.

To fulfill the need of hosting a broad range of activities, the complex has been articulated into different pathways. The massive structure and the glass envelope create an ethereal effect that recalls the vastness of human knowledge.
The building is dominated by different shades of grey, from unrendered concrete to grey-toned glass shell that contrast with the colours of the brise soleil slats.

The importance of materials in construction

In the course of time, the interest in eco-friendly materials which improve and protect human health has greatly increased. The introduction of CAM (Minimum Environmental Criteria) in the Italian public administration tender is an example of this new path to sustainable development.

Since 2016, it is compulsory to respect the minimum environmental criteria and to specify the emissions of volatile organic compounds in order to take part to public administration tenders in Italy.

The fundamental role of
powder coating in the new VOC-free finishes

The result of using powder coating to decorate metal elements like brise soleil, window profiles or facade components is that products will not emit volatile organic compounds in the air. This kind of finishes can be certified by international institutions (visit the webpage ENVIRONMENTAL PROTOCOLS to learn more) when dealing with public or private projects.

For MAST project in Bologna we powder coated the external metal elements with RAL 9006 “Alluminio Brillante” Class 2 finish. This way we combined beauty, harmony between different materials, high durability and sustainability.
