Feltrinelli Porta Volta

The project designed by the Swiss Herzog & de Meuron is part of P.I.I. Porta Volta Fondazione Feltrinelli. The streets surrounding the area follow the layout of the old Spanish Walls Bastion, giving it a peculiar “V” shape. The building consists of 6 floors with a total surface of about 10,000 m2 and 2 underground floors. The complex includes three buildings which recreate the city walls following a simple geometrical scheme.
The curtain wall is composed by a glass façade while the shell of the buildings is made of concrete, combined with a shuttering system.

All the façades are transparent, with the exception of those between the Foundation and Feltrinelli Building which are blind. The foundations, cast on site, are 60 cm thick and are reinforced with two-way slab. On the underground floors, the columns and the interior partition walls have been cast on site too, as well as the staircases, elevators and floors. Prefabricated pillars have been installed beginning from the ground floor.

The vertical punctiform elements, similar to triangles, prefabricated and above-ground, complete the structure together with the columns, thus creating a harmonious building. The pillars have been prefabricated in order to guarantee surface finishing. The aluminium windows fixed to metallic braced frames have been coated by Decoral® Group with a Class 1 black glossy powder.
